Doherty Garden Works
Specialist in Garden Timber Structures
Michael Doherty

Originally from Ireland, I've been living in Kent for over a decade now. I've spent most of my working life in landscaping in some form or other.
I initially worked in the industry as a way to make money in the summer while studying marine zoology at university. I soon discovered that I much preferred working creatively with my hands to working in a lab and crunching data, which led me to pursue my interest in this area following completion of my degree.
In my first role, working for one of the largest landscape companies in Ireland, I was involved in large commercial planting and maintenance projects. This involved working with all plant sizes and varieties imaginable, from bare-root plants by the thousands, to massive root-ball trees that had to be craned into place.
I eventually pursued my interests within the company, which led to building private garden projects of various sizes. I particularly enjoyed the variety of this work, as it involved various disciplines and skills, such as being able to work the earth, plant, build in stone or wood, and often work with water in order to realise the client’s wishes.
Despite this wide range of experience, wood has always been my favourite medium to work with, and I've spent most of my time in the UK almost exclusively building in timber, as can be seen by the projects on this site. If you have an idea of what you want, I can work with you on the design as well as the building.
