Basement Level Garden

Garden design by Gavin McWilliam, now of Wilson McWilliam Studio.

This London terraced house had a complete rebuild from the ground up. The basement level was lowered in order to make a suitable space for a kitchen and family room.

Naturally, the garden had to be rebuilt from scratch as well. However, this run of houses backs onto a shared, 'residents only,' garden space, so the brief was to make the most pratical use of the shaded space adjacent to the kitchen.

To this end the area was paved with travertine, and the retaining walls painted white to brighten the space. I was brought in to make the hardwood fencing which sits behind the stainless steel planters, and to build the frame for the storage seating to be clad, as well as the hardwood seat itself.

Subequently, I was asked to build a unit to disguise the rather large extractor fan bolted to one wall. This doubled as additional storage space.

Finally, I was asked to build a seating area with planters at either end on the upstairs balcony.

Nothing to do with Carpentry, but I was involved in getting the whole thing together...Plus it just looks nice.

Built to house a rather large extractor fan, this doubles as extra storage as well as being just the right height to sit on!

Almost finished....Built over the leaded section of the balcony in order to hide it, room was left for a planter either end so that clematis could be trained to grow up the wall. Stainless steel wire in a grid pattern was fixed in place on the wall.
