Balcony Deck
Built to replace a deck that was unsafe, the client wished to keep as much of the look of the orignal structure as was possible.
The client wished the handrail to be left as you see it, as they had their own ideas as to how it would be finished off after it was painted.
![]() Painted DeckAs close to the original as I was willing to go. Less cut joins for water to ingress and rot to start. Every cut or potential point of ingress treated fully with preservative before painting. |

![]() Original Stairs & DeckOverly complicated joinery with no consideration as to how the joints would hold and react to water. Rot was everywhere, but especially in the mortice and tenon joins and scarf joints. Some of the joists were so rotten they simply pulled away easily from underneath as only the paint was holding them on. |
![]() Original Stairs & DeckThe original stairs were covered in thick gloss paint, as was the deck. Overly complicated joinery with no consideration as to how the joints would hold and react to water. Rot was everywhere, but especially in the mortice and tenon joins and scarf joints. Some of the joists were so rotten they simply pulled away easily from underneath as only the paint was holding them on. |
